Bloggers need one obvious thing in, a domain name, in order to blog and make money. Let’s face it, having your own domain name just looks more professional, it shows the blog reader that the blogger is serious about their blog, and it most certainly helps the blogger to make more money with the blog. Free blogs are great for bloggers who only blog as a hobby. But if you are serious about blogging and making money with your blog, you need a domain name, and you need a GOOD domain name.

It can be a difficult task trying to think of a domain name to buy, and an even more difficult task trying to find one that you like that isn’t already taken. There are two ways of looking at what kind of domain name to buy. One is to go for something generic that pertains to your overall niche. Another is to look for something that is very much what your blog is about, straight to the point. Either of these ideas could be a good match for your domain name for the blog or blog niche.

Lately there has been a lot of talk about how hyphenated domain names are better, that having the hypens in the domain name somehow ranks better with Google. My advice is to stay away from hypenated domain names. There are two reasons for this. First, your readers will not want to type hypens in order to get to your blog site. Second, your content should be keyword rich and Google will pick up on that and your page or article titles, rather than the domain name. While obviously the domain name is important, what is more important is getting traffic and keeping it. Having a hypenated domain name that readers will have to likely type to get to your blog is not going to endear them to you and make them want to come back. Therefore, make it easy for them. Even though it’s likely that the majority of your traffic will come from search engines, you will still always have those that are repeat visitors (which is the goal also), and you don’t want to run them off by having to type hypens into the search bar just to get to your site.
